Movies: The Last King of Scotland

Till now all my reviews are on Films shot/based in Africa.

The Last King of Scotland is an acedemy-winning film based on Giles folen's fictional novel.
The Last King of Scotland tells the story of Dr. Nicholas Garrigan a young Scottish doctor who travels to Uganda and becomes the personal physician to the Dictator Idi Amin. The movie is loosely based on factual events of Amin's rule.
It follows the arrival in Africa of a young Scottish doctor looking for something better than a life settling down in his father’s medical practice back home. By chance he comes to Amin’s aid at a roadside accident and is soon offered the seemingly luxurious position as his personal doctor. All appears rosey for the doctor, played wonderfully by James McAvoy, as he drifts from poolside parties to state dinners in his bosses palace. But soon events start to not only change his role at Amin’s side, but to threaten his very existance. As the film progresses it becomes darker and more violent reflecting the brutal manner in which Uganda suffered under his leadership. Forest Whitaker is very convincing in the eponymous role as Idi Amin, turning from the charming new president to a psychopathic megalomaniac. Well worth seeing.
