All i would say is 'A modern political masterpiece'. I remember passing on my DVD to couple of my friends & asking them to watch it forsure. Later on they admitted that they doozed off watching this movie. they found too slow & boring. i admit was a little too long like "The English Patient" but both are superb...
Rachel Weisz is truly transcendent.. She is just so immensely real and powerful and alive! Ralph Fienne's role as that of a somewhat distant man is the perfect complement to this. On a private level, the film deals with the problems of communication in a marriage, and at a public level touches on the use of Africans as human guinea pigs by large drug companies. As Tessa, Rachel Weisz is a strong woman, a passionate advocate of human rights who is unafraid to create public scandals in the interest of saving lives. Ralph Fiennes gives a sensitive performance as a cold British diplomat and distant husband who gradually thaws into a compassionate human being who loves the soul of Africa. Interesting contrasts in the use of color by the director balance the different worlds in conflict in this film. Cooler colors prevail in the well-ordered life of the British diplomat earlier in the film, where a more brilliant palette of vivid colors later in the film reflect the beauty and chaos of Africa.
The Constant Gardener was well worth watching.
